The parents of O'Grady include Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor, and Jan O'Grady. The family was raised by her parents within Wheaton (Illinois) and she graduated in 1981 from North High School of Wheaton. The model was featured in several commercials prior to shifting to Los Angeles in 1986. The career of O'Grady began as a model and commercial actress in Montgomery Ward. She made her debut on the screen with the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a prominent role as a recurring character in ABC Drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Also, she appeared on several other shows, as well as appeared in made-for films and television shows. Her first big role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the big-haired secretary between 1993 and 1996, was awarded Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actress.
